Position Title:
Academic Year Adjunct Lecturer in Art History

Position Type:
Fixed Term (Fixed Term)

Salary Range:

Salary will be between $61,260 and $64,980, depending on the number of college-level courses taught and years of experience. Benefits eligible.

Purpose:

PURPOSE:

The Department of Art and Art History at Santa Clara University, a Jesuit, Catholic university, invites applications for an Academic Year Adjunct Lecturer (one-year, non-tenure-track) in Art History in the area of Indigenous cultures of North or South America. Courses may include three sections of Cultures & Ideas (C&I) I and II. Final assignments will be made according to the academic qualifications of the individual and programmatic need. The successful candidate will teach the equivalent of six courses, with at least one course in each quarter, fall, winter and spring. Each quarter is 10 weeks long, with an 11th week set for final examinations. This position starts September 1, 2024. This position is for in-person instruction.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach three sequences (each with two sections taught sequentially) of C&I. C&I courses approach the history of visual culture from a global perspective and must include Western and non-Western components over a span of at least 200 years. Art historians may choose to teach using a pre-approved syllabus for the C&I sequence or develop their own sequence in conjunction with departmental expectations (Please note: new courses are submitted to a rigorous approval process through a college faculty committee.) For details, see https://www.scu.edu/provost/core/foundations/#ci-1-and-2/.

Examples of pre-approved Art History courses that satisfy C&I requirements include: Art, Power, and Propaganda; Art of Contact: New Worlds; Mediterranean Encounters; Trading Places: Art and Identity; and Exhibiting the Global. See https://www.scu.edu/cas/art/academic-programs/art-history.html for more information.
  • The Fall schedule for this position requires teaching one C&I 1 section on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9:15am-10:20am. The Winter schedule consists of three C&I sections on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9:15am-10:20am and 11:45am-12:50pm and 1:00pm-2:05pm (two C&I 1 and one C&I 2). The Spring schedule consists of two sections on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 11:45am-12:50pm and 1:00pm-2:05pm (2 C&I 2). Due to scheduling requirements for Cultures & Ideas sections (which must be taught on the same days at the same times for two quarters in a row), there is little flexibility in the teaching schedule once finalized by the department chair and the College of Arts and Sciences Dean's Office.
