THE UNIVERSITY

FACULTY RESPONSIBILITIES
In addition to teaching and scholarship, faculty are expected to engage in service to the department, school, and community. Sonoma State is committed to the Teacher/Scholar model and places an emphasis on faculty support of student research. Faculty are also encouraged to participate in our distinctive, high-impact Freshman and Sophomore year programs and to foster our commitment to the CSU Graduation Initiative 2025 through excellent teaching, advising, and mentoring. Aligned with the California Faculty Association Collective Bargaining Agreement, during the first 2 years of the probationary period the instructional assignment will be reduced by 2 courses per academic year. THE DEPARTMENT
For nearly half a century, Sonoma State University's Department of Art and Art History has been the hub of visual art on campus and in Sonoma County. As a center of creativity and experimentation, the department provides rigorous undergraduate education in the study and practice of the visual arts. Our programs offer in-depth instruction in technique, concept, and history of art.

Our students pursue studies leading to the BA and BFA degrees in art studio or the BA degree in art history. Art studio degree emphases are available in ceramics, painting, printmaking, photography, sculpture, and works on paper. Committed to the recognition of individuality and unique accomplishment, faculty work closely with students to encourage personal direction and ideas. We strive to create a diverse and inclusive faculty serving an increasingly diverse student body.

Designed specifically for the pursuit of studio art practices and the study of art history and museum and gallery studies, the department facilities are located in one of the best equipped physical plants within the California State University system. The Art Building has a total of 46,604 square feet of space with an instructional net of 30,485 square feet.

The Department is a fully accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Art and Design.

DUTIES OF THE POSITION
The candidate will:
  • Teach foundational courses in art and digital media
  • Demonstrate proficiency and an ability to teach art, design, and media software such as Illustrator, Photoshop, Lightroom, Premiere, Wordpress
    (proficiency in Sketch, After Effects, Blender, Maya, InDesign, Autodesk, or others a plus)
  • Develop curriculum in the candidate's area of expertise
  • Demonstrate a critical and practical understanding of emerging technologies in a fine arts context (Makerspace included)
  • Pursue interdisciplinary collaboration across diverse media and technologies
  • Demonstrate an ability to work with faculty across the spectrum of disciplines in the art department
  • Work as a team player with a commitment to collegiality with colleagues, staff, and technicians
  • Serve as a respectful mentor and advisor to students
  • Contribute to imagining the evolution of both programs and facilities as students and technologies change
  • Have demonstrated an active artistic practice

    In addition to teaching and scholarship, faculty are expected to engage in academic advising; to assist the department with program assessment, administrative and/or committee work; and to serve on campus-wide committees.


    PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS
    Required Qualifications:
    To be recommended for appointment, the candidate must have an M.F.A. or equivalent degree in their area of expertise; regional and/or national recognition by exhibition, publication or critical comment; and be pursuing a career as a professional artist, with primary expression in digital media. The successful candidate has at least two (2) years of college teaching experience. Candidates must demonstrate thoughtful engagement with diversity, inclusion, and equity and be able to serve students from a variety of socio-economic, ethnic, racial, gender, sexual identity, age, and ability backgrounds. All candidates meeting the minimum qualifications are encouraged to apply.

    Preferred Qualifications:
  • Candidates exhibiting interest in curricular development and cross-disciplinary pedagogy.
  • Ability to teach photography

    RANK AND SALARY
    Salary, service credit, and rank depends upon academic preparation and professional experience. The salary range for this position is: $75,325 - $83,652.
